A promising local athlete today admitted stealing more than $4,000 from MarketPlace.
Aaron Perinchief, 18, pleaded guilty this morning to falsifying receipts and pocketing $4,213 between April 15 and June 13.
The court heard Perinchief was employed at the Dollar Depot at the Somerset and Shelly Bay locations.
The manager noticed there were a few odd transactions in June 3 made near closing time.
At this time, Perinchief was responsible for the closing the stores and, on June 13, the store manager decided to conduct surveillance on him.
At 5pm that day, Perinchief was seen counting $50 and $100 bills and making unauthorized transactions when no customers were in the store.
Perinchief was confronted by the manager and denied doing anything wrong but he later admitted processing unauthorized transactions and taking $250.
Perinchief was arrested on suspicion of theft and admitted making the transactions to be able to take the cash.
He said he only took $150 from the store. But the copies of the transactions show that he had taken $4,213 from the two stores.
Mitigating for Perinchief, Wayne Caines told the court his client accepts full responsibility for his actions.
“His family was in a very difficult set of circumstances. He did something that was wrong, immoral and out of character to help his family out of a tight spot.”
Mr Caines said he has mentored Perinchief since the age of 12. The court heard Perinchief has been accepted to a university in Florida to play basketball. Mr Caines also said he competed for Bermuda in the Carifta Games at long jump.
“It is believed that if he is allowed to go to university, he will bring great honour to his family and his country, which he was put on the planet to do.”
The court heard Perinchief has paid back the money in full and has written a letter of apology to the owner of MarketPlace.
Mr Caines asked for a conditional discharge.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered a social inquiry report and adjourned the matter to November 13 for sentencing.
