Detectives have given unique insight into the painstaking and meticulous investigation that sealed the fate of Bermuda’s youngest convicted murderer.

Police trawled through hundreds of hours of CCTV footage and interviewed dozens of witnesses in just a few days to ensure they got justice for the family of Malcolm Outerbridge.

They fast-tracked DNA forensic tests on vital pieces of blood-spatter evidence to build a cast-iron case against the teen killer Rashaun Codrington. The murder probe in October 2011 came at a time when the Serious Crime Unit was inundated with a wave of gang-related shootings.

And it required officers to work 16-hour-days as their 15-year-old suspect sat in a prison cell refusing to cooperate.

Detectives in the case told the Sun that Codrington could have walked free had it not been for the overwhelming forensic evidence against him. They also praised witnesses who came forward and identified Codrington as the youth they saw walking along the trail before the killing.

Codrington was jailed indefinitely or at ‘the court’s pleasure’ at Supreme Court last week after pleading guilty to murder.
