Is great white shark returning to Bermuda?

Could 3,500 pound Great White Shark Mary Lee be on her way back to Bermuda?

According to newsobserver.com, Mary Lee has returned to the Carolina coastline. She has travelled as far east as Bermuda and as far south as Jacksonville, Florida after being tagged in Massachusetts last September. 

You will remember we first reported in February that Mary Lee was 90 miles away from Bermuda. 

The next day, she was closing in at 41 miles, then 35 miles. 

On February 22, Mary Lee was just 21 miles offshore, sparking even more curiosity with locals who wondered if she would come even closer. 

Mary Lee seemed to say goodbye to Bermuda on February 25, then she decided to head south. She was tracked at 71 miles to our south. 

This morning, www.newsobserver.com reported Mary Lee had returned to the Carolinas. 

“A ping from a satellite tag on the 16-foot-long shark showed Mary Lee was just off the coast in Murrells Inlet on Friday morning” the website said. 

Since being tagged last September, researchers say Mary Lee has traveled more than 13,285 miles along the east coast. 

Mary Lee headed north in January. 

The website said shark researcher Chris Fischer said scientists know little about great whites and they are not quite sure why Mary Lee headed north so quickly.

Fischer is the founder of OCEARCH, a nonprofit dedicated to studying great whites and other large marine species.
