The plan of the devil is quite consistent. His plan is to steal, kill, and destroy. The devil desires to take your life and sift it until you feel it can never be put back together again.
That is exactly what happened with the damsel in the text. Her youth and her liberty were stolen. Her spirit or character was on its way to being killed.
The devil wanted her destroyed, so that if you saw her, alive or dead, you would not recognize her. That’s destruction.
This damsel was out of control. Her background is not known, but what is known for sure is her state of affairs.
Others manipulated her for a price. She was abused on a regular basis, and no one had been willing to step into her situation and deal with it.
Well, here is where you need to understand that God does care for the lost, the languishing, and the least amongst us. God cared enough that when the Apostle Paul and his ministry team were set to go to one place, the Holy Spirit (which is the mind of God) stirred them or directed them to go another way.
Acts 16: Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,
7 After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.
God will always have someone who you can look unto to show you the new way you must go. Paul ended up in Philippi where he and his team met up and become friends with a rich woman named Lydia.
Was she the reason the Holy Spirit directed them to Philippi? Did God want to show His favour upon His servants by having them “hook up” with this rich woman? No, I think not.
Setting a damsel free
No, it was about a poor damsel, not about a rich woman. This was about setting a damsel free, and not about having a good hotel setup in Lydia’s home.
This was about a young person who was seemingly lost for good, and not about a good woman who found acceptance in the heart of God’s servants.
The Holy Spirit yearns to connect with those who do not think their life has great value. The Holy Spirit desires to speak life into lifeless situations, and will use a Lydia to get to a damsel in distress.
What is it that young girls and young women need today in the island of Bermuda? They need a way out.
They need to know that there is hope for them, and that they can leave the mess in which they find themselves.
What is the key? The key is that this damsel recognized where she was not and where she wanted to be.
Acts 16: 16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
When such young women see the freedom of salvation on the face of Christians and experience the joy emanating from the heart of Christians, they then have an opportunity to claim that for themselves.
Yes, freedom and liberty in Jesus Christ is available for all. All you have to do is follow after it, and it shall be done.
18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
If you desire freedom, it is yours today. If you want to change your lifestyle, it can be done right now!
Paul spoke to the controlling spirit that wanted to destroy the damsel. She experienced a temporary conviction so that she could be conformed to the image of God’s dear Son, Jesus Christ.
Damsels, do not stop at conviction. Allow God to conform your life to the life that He has just for you. Respice finem. n
