I love making art that speaks to people

Chris Marson Spent his formative years drawing and by the time he was five he was  drawing his own comic strips.

Making images comes naturally. Marson has been passionately involved in numerous activities over the years, sailing, kayaking, gliding, kites,  airplanes, photography, boatbuilding and boat designing but he always found time to draw and paint.

“I’m still learning and at the end of every day there is something tangible that I have made. For me this is a very important thing. My recent work is getting stronger. I have been going back to tonal work and letting the paintings tell more stories.”

Marson has an exhibition opening this Sunday at 5:30pm at the Bermuda Art Centre at Dockyard along with fellow artists Jonah Jones, Chris Grimes and Chesley Trott.  He will display 15 new watercolours. 

When did you last laugh out loud?

When i got the request to do this interview.

What is your earliest memory?

Sitting in the corner of a schoolyard drawing while everyone else played football.

What were you like in school?

Who is your hero/heroine?

Moebius (Jean Giraud), French artist, creator of  Arzach and founder of Metal Hurlant.

Which film character would you be?

Dr Who.

Your greatest fear?

Being a film character.

Your ultimate ambition?

I’m living it everyday, I told my parents I wanted to be an artist when I was about seven years old.

Describe yourself in three words.

Big bearded artist.

Best party you’ve ever been to?

Party? Maybe? One of these days, perhaps?

Biggest regret?

Non, je ne regrette rien.

Closest you’ve ever come to death?

Never been anywhere close to expiring, although I did have spinal meningitis which wasn’t fun.

Your desert island song?

White Rabbit as sung by Grace Slick.

What animal would you be and why?

Southern albatross, I could soar forever.

If you had a time machine, where would you go?

To Kitty Hawk and the Wright Brothers first flight.

Your most memorable dream?

I think I remember having one, but I woke up.

Most unpleasant exchange you’ve have had with a person?

I had a nasty exchange with a dog once, took
32 stitches to fix my face.

Best advice you have ever taken?

Use a bigger brush and squint hard.

If you weren’t an artist what would you be?

There’s something else?

What’s your best joke?

Being an artist.

Most treasured possession?

My sable travel watercolour brush, I’ve lost three already, all in San Francisco.

A dream location for a home?

West coast of Vancouver Island near Tofino.

What keeps you up at night?

Eating chocolate too late in the evening.

Most important lesson life has taught you?

The only way to get good at anything is by putting in the hours.

Making art that speaks to people.
