Statement by Acting Minister of Finance Michael Fahy
I’m pleased to welcome you to Bermuda’s observance of World Post Day, which is celebrated each year on October 9th.
Every year, more than 150 countries celebrate World Post Day in a variety of ways.
The purpose of this day is to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in our everyday lives, and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries.
Here in Bermuda, we have much to celebrate about the Bermuda Post Office, a unique institution that has withstood the test of time.
Since its establishment in 1812, over 200 years ago, the BPO has always strived to respond to the needs of its customers, while maintaining its heritage and service culture.
The BPO is the premier local and international provider of postal and other services in Bermuda – a one stop shop connecting people and businesses through courteous, professional and affordable products and services.
To remain competitive in today’s high tech economy, we are reinventing ourselves to be an efficient, innovative and customer focused organization.
The Post Office is taking steps to transform itself into a 21st century postal service by providing a broad range of services and products beyond its traditional mail services.
It should be noted the BPO ranks in top 35 of all UPU Postal administrations worldwide for on time delivery standards: We have consistently achieved a successful delivery rate of 95% of letter mail in 2 working days or less.
In recent months the Post Office has embarked on several key initiatives to contribute to the social, economic and infrastructural development of Bermuda and its residents.
As part of our new awareness efforts we have launched a multi-media strategy, which includes social media with the aim of furthering our message.
Messages like advising people who shop overseas that it’s cheaper to bring in items via our Express Mail Service, and that our Parcel Post service is significantly more economical than private couriers, particularly if individuals don’t need an item the next day and can wait 5-7 days.
We are also promoting our Registered Email product, called RPost, which is a secure way to send important documents via email.
Documents can even be encrypted for additional security and we believe that this is the fastest and most secure way to send information.
While we are making efforts to stay abreast of developments in technology, the BPO will continue to provide our traditional services and remain accessible to those who prefer the personal touch of human interaction.
In fact we believe that no modern technology can replace the outstanding standard of customer service provided to our clients.
In fact, customer service has much improved and we are now regularly getting emails and calls from customers, commending staff at all levels for their excellent customer service.
Ladies and gentlemen, before I conclude my remarks I would like to take this opportunity to thank the employees of the Post Office both past and present, for their significant contribution to the social, economic and infrastructural development of Bermuda.
They have helped transform the BPO into a more customer focused, innovative and sustainable postal service.
Joining me today are two long serving employees – Rudolph Allen who officially retires at the end of October, and Pamela Minors; both of whom have served the Bermuda Post Office for over 40 years providing an exemplary level of service during their careers.
Their unstinting commitment to excellence and professionalism is a testament to their desire to service their communities to the best of their abilities!
It is my hope that our organization will be around for another 200 years continuing to service our customers with the highest standards of excellence!
Thank you.
