‘I want to travel more’ - Miss Bermuda

Applying a professional face of makeup every day was just one of Miss Bermuda Katherine Arnfield’s worries while in Indonesia for Miss World.

She also had to deal with 16-hour days, potential suicide bombers and being guarded by two security agents when she walked anything farther then a couple of feet.

Ms Arnfield returned from Indonesia on Monday night after 46 hours of travel.

Speaking with the Bermuda Sun after some much needed rest, the 17-year-old is ready to start school today at Saltus and has plenty of stories to tell her classmates.

“The scariest thing was probably all the protests because, normally, Miss World is quite safe but this year everywhere we went we had to have security because there were suicide bombers and the leader said they would throw acid on us.

 “Everywhere we went we had to have a chaperone and two security guards. Even a ten-metre walk, we needed security guards watching us.”

At the pageant on Saturday night, there were 700 police officers, two warships and helicopters — all used for security purposes.

“It was really intense, but we felt really safe. It was really strange because I am used to Bermuda being quite safe but in Indonesia it was dangerous.

She said the people of Indonesia were so nice that the threats seemed out of place and “scary”. 

Ms Arnfield said she really hit it off with Miss Jamaica and that helped make the event fun.

“Even though it was a serious situation, we had a good laugh.”

Ms Arnfield said while she done quite a bit of travelling around the globe, she had not been to Asia so this was a new experience for her.

“It’s opened my eyes to the world. It’s made me love travelling even more.

“When I got there, it was so interesting. I would really love to travel more in the future and I will.”

The Saltus student said she matured during the trip.

“We were responsible for everything. We had to wake up at 6am everyday.

“We had to fully prepare ourselves the night before even if we got in late.

“It’s taught me to be really responsible.”

One part of the competition she found difficult was that she had to have a full face of makeup everyday and her hair perfectly styled.

“We were responsible for our hair and makeup except for the top model competition, the opening ceremony and the closing ceremony.

‘The girls wore full faces of makeup everyday and would wake up two hours early to do their makeup perfectly every morning.

“They would go to breakfast looking like they were going to prom, with fake lashes and fake hair.

“I only wear a little bit so I went there only expecting full makeup when I had a show.”

She said her roommate, Miss Bahamas helped her with her makeup, as she didn’t have much experience.

Ms Arnfield thanked everyone who supported her in Bermuda including her coach Dianne Whittaker, the Miss Bermuda Pageant organiser Milika Trott, AS Coopers for her clothing, Regina Simmons for her gown and all her friends and family.
