Mother caught on CCTV stealing from employer

A mother-of-two today admitted stealing $200 from her former employer.

Kyla Tear, 31, was the assistant manager at MAC Cosmetics, a Gibbons Company store, on July 31.

The court heard at 8:56 that night, Tear processed the cash earnings of that day. On August 6, a cashier report was checked by the accounts department.

The earnings for that day were $200. After experiencing cash shortages at the MAC store, the HR manager decided to check the store’s CCTV footage.

On the footage, Tear was seen counting notes from the register. She put notes on the side and then folded notes under the daily cash reports.

At 2.30pm on August 6, Tear was called to the HR manager’s office and questioned about the incident.

“She admitted taking the money and was arrested that day.

Mitigating for Tear, duty counsel Saul Dismont said: “It was very wrong what she did. She intended to take the money out and borrow it and repay it.

“She put the money back the next day. She has written a letter of apology.

“She understands this amounts to theft.”

Mr Dismont also said Tear lost her job as a result of the incident.

“It was a stupid decision. She just thought she would take the money out and put it back the next day.”

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned the matter to January 17 and ordered pre-sentence reports. Tear was granted bail.
