A man who beat his wife and dragged her around the house by her hair in front of their child was today jailed for three months.
Aswad Wilson, 29, got into an argument with wife Jewel Wilson at 1am on October 3. The argument quickly escalated to a physical altercation.
At the first hearing, Crown Counsel Cindy Clarke told the court Wilson grabbed his wife’s hair and ripped some of it off of her scalp and then began to strangle her by putting his arm around her neck.
“During the altercation, Wilson violently twisted the complainant’s head from side to side and banging it.
‘The sound of the commotion awoke their young child who begged Wilson to stop.”
The court heard Wilson continued to assault his wife by dragging her around by her hair and then beat her all about the body with his fists.
Jewel Wilson managed to escape to the door, but her husband grabbed her again. She finally escaped to a neighbour’s home and the police were called.
Wilson was arrested at 2:05am when police attended the scene.
Wilson, who has previous convictions for violence, apologised during that hearing and said he was drunk at the time.
Today, the court heard Wilson is currently under a six-month suspended prison sentence and three years probation.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said; “In the circumstances, having considered all the circumstances, the appropriate sentence is three months imprisonment from October 4 plus three years probation.”
The conditions of probation were set out in his presentencing reports.
