A 47-year-old man today admitted not turning up for a painting job after he was paid $1,000 in advance.
Anthony Dyer, of no fixed abode went to the complainant’s Pembroke home at 10:30am on June 7, 2012 to ask if she needed her roof painted.
The court heard she told Dyer she had already received a quote from someone but she would take one from him as well.
Dyer then gave her a quote and reference. The complainant went inside her home and called the two references Dyer gave her, both recommended him as a painter.
The court heard Dyer told the woman that she had cracks in the roof that needed to be fixed. She told him she prefers paint from Rowe Spurling, but Dyer told her he prefers Pembroke Paint and gave her a quote of $3,069.
Dyer said he would need money upfront to get materials for the job. The complainant agreed to hire him and gave him a cheque for $1,000.
They both agreed Dyer would start the work the following day by assessing the cracks and would begin painting on Monday.
The next day, the complainant put the ladder outside for Dyer, but he never showed up.
On July 4, the complainant reported the matter to police and Dyer was arrested.
The court heard he has previous convictions and was jailed days after this incident happened for another offence.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner gave him a six-month sentence from June 25, 2012.
He added: “Which for the avoidance of doubt, you have already served.”
He was also given two years probation that was ordered last June, but will start today.
