Some local Filipinas are able to breathe a sigh of relief today that their family and friends are okay after super typhoon Haiyan has killed at least 140 people and displaced more than 800,000 others.
The Bermuda Sun spoke to sisters Mary and Joy Deolledue and Magdalena Deanon.
The pair have been glued to reports in the days leading up to super typhoon ripping across their homeland.
They were able to get in contact this morning and receive the good news that everyone is okay.
Mary said: “Luckily we were able to talk with my niece a little while ago. The electricity and the power is back on, but their Internet connection is still not working, but they are all well and safe.
“Oh my God, this is such a relief for us that they are safe and sound but before we were very anxious about it and praying that they were going to be safe. It’s a super typhoon so it’s hard for us to be away from them.”
Mary’s daughter still lives in the Philippines and they also have a brother, sister, nephews and nieces
She added ever since there were reports that the Philippines would experience super typhoon Haiyan, they have been following the coverage.
“My sister and I have been listening to a local radio station in the Philippines where our city is.”
She added the worst news so far is that “the local Red Cross is reporting that there are 1,000 to 1,200 dead”.
Mary said seeing images of people’s homes under water or people have to climb onto their roofs for safety has her still praying for safety of her fellow countrymen.
Magdalena Deanon told the Sun when she first heard the news about Typhoon Haiyan she felt "nervous and worried and couldn't sleep" as she had been trying to get in contact with her family since Thursday but was not able to reach them. But she was finally able to get in touch with them today and found out they are all safe, which was a tremendous relief.
