A 42-year-old man was today fined $1700 after he admitting driving while impaired with a baby in the front seat.

Omara Dunn of Devonshire was driving a grey Renault car on October 24 at 5:30pm when he was pulled over by police officers because he wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

When the officers pulled him over on Middle Road in Warwick, they saw a one-year-old baby in the front being held by a female passenger who also didn’t have a seatbelt on.

Dunn exited the vehicle and approached the officers. The could see he was unsteady on his feet, that his eyes were glazed and he smelled of alcohol.

The defendant was arrested and officers realised he had a warrant.

Addressing the court, Dunn said: “I wasn’t drunk but I had a few drinks and I was capable of driving”.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner banned him from all vehicles for 12 months, handed him a $1,500 fine for impaired driving, a $100 fine for not wearing a seatbelt and a $100 fine for carrying a passenger unlawfully.
