David Darrell held off Tyler Smith to win the Junior Heritage Day Classic and said it felt good.
After the victory, Darrell needed medical attention, but was okay.
Darrell finished in 10:40, just two seconds ahead of Smith. Aaron Jacobs, last year’s winner, finished third in 11:06.
Selah Tuzo won the girl’s race in 12:16 followed by Lynsey Palmer (12:36) and Zakkiyyah Showers (12:38).
He told the Bermuda Sun: “It was a hard day of running but it felt pretty good after the meds checked me out.”
Darrell said there was a lead group of four runners and he and Smith made their move around People’s Pharmacy on Victoria Street.
“We took a glance back and saw they were pretty far back. After that, that’s when the race really started with me and Tyler gunning for who was going to come first.”
Darrell added when the pair reached the WER Joell Tennis Stadium he was in front of Smith “but I heard him coming. The crowd really helped me bring it home, especially coming down the last corner and coming down the hill to the finish.”
Smith said: “Everyone went pretty fast at the start. After the birdcage, coming up the first hill, the slower people started to drop back a little bit.”
He added that Darrell started to pick up the pace “and by that time I was pretty tired and he just sprinted and was able to beat me.”
Smith, who is a triathlete, said he had not been doing as much running so “second place is pretty good”.
