The new Millennium charter may have arrived just in the nick of time for islanders after yesterday’s ferry accident.
The ferry, Resolute, crashed into Cavello Bay Dock at around 8:30am injuring a female passenger and a member of crew.
The vessel sustained damage to her hull and the Bermuda Sun understands she will be back in service later this week.
But it will be good news for Marine and Ports that the Millennium is due to go into service today between Dockyard and Hamilton.
The new charter, which has been brought in from the US, has been up at Dockyard since she arrived at the weekend.
Last night Transport Minister Shawn Crockwell apologised for saying the Millennium had arrived on Friday.
He added: “In the House of Assembly on Friday I erroneously stated that the Millennium charter ferry had already arrived on island as I was advised by my technical officer earlier in the week that the ferry would be on island by Friday.
“It turned out the Millennium was somewhat delayed while they waited for a suitable weather window to come to the island and arrived on Sunday, May 19.
“I apologise for this honest mistake. However, I am thrilled the Millennium has arrived and look forward to the vessel entering service very shortly to assist our local fleet for the summer season.”
Meanwhile an investigation into yesterday’s ferry accident at Cavello Bay has been launched to determine what cause the vessel to crash into the dock leaving a male crew member and a female passenger with minor injuries.
A police spokesman said: “Around 8:30am on Tuesday, May 21 police received a report that the ferry Resolute had collided with the Cavello Bay dock.
“Two people onboard, a male crew member and a female passenger, apparently received minor injuries as a result. There were no other injuries reported. The Resolute was also damaged.
