Tokio Millennium Re is gearing up for its Sprint Triathlon and the Senior School Challenge.

The events will be held on June 9 at Albuoy’s Point in Hamilton.

A press statement said the 7th annual event is geared to draw participants from all athletic levels.

Individuals and teams can participate in a sprint triathlon or newcomers can take part in a Try-a-Tri, which consists of a shorter course.  There is also a duathlon for kids.

Race directors Ed Jordan and Vernée Simmons hope the Senior School Triathlon Challenge will draw even more participants this year.

Ms Simmons said: “Tokio has always had a focus on kids with a junior component to the triathlon but we wanted to reach a broader audience so created the Senior School Triathlon Challenge.

“With a team event it is easier to find swimmers, bikers and runners separately and put them together.”

This year, Tokio is also introducing a Senior School Duathlon Challenge.

Mr. Jordan said the run - bike - run makes the event accessible to more people.

“In Bermuda there is a large community of runners and cyclists so we hope this draws more participation from our youth.”

Last year, Saltus Grammar School was the overall triathlon winner, walking away with $500 for this school.

Somersfield Academy was second earning $250 and the Berkeley Institute placed third winning $150.

Mr. Jordan added: “By incorporating both a Senior School Duathlon and Triathlon Challenge, we hope to encourage twice as many students to compete this year.”

Schools participating this year include Saltus, CedarBridge Academy, BHS, Berkeley, Warwick Academy, Bermuda Institute and Somersfield.

Challenge teams can consist of boys, girls or mixed.

The triathlon teams will be competing in a 200m swim, 8km bike and 2km run.

Duathlon teams will participate in a run-bike-run consisting of a 2km run, 8km ride and a second 2km run.

Students wishing to compete may sign-up through their PE teacher or register online at www.racedayworld.com.
