Jail for man who threatened to kill his ex

A man who sent a message to his ex-girlfriend threatening to kill her has been jailed for six months.

Detroy Smith sent a picture of a gun to his ex-partner, Mikaela Pearman, and told her he would 'mess up' her new boyfriend.

Smith was in the US when he sent the WhatsApp messages on October 24, 2012.

The court heard that Smith and Ms Pearman had been in a relationship for several years and had a child together before they broke up.

At Supreme Court this morning Smith, 27, apologised for his actions.

He said: "I want to apologise to my two sons for the time I have spent away from them.

"And I want to apologise to the victim for sending the texts. I will not go on to her property or interfere with her.

"I am very much over the relationship I had, and on my release from prison I am going to get married to the mother of my second son."

Smith was sentenced to serve six months in prison, but because he has been in custody since January 16 he is likely to be released either immediately or very soon.

Judge Charlene Scott also imposed an 18-month probation order on Smith ordering that he take part in anger management classes and a life skills course.

She said: "I am looking for you to begin taking responsibility for your actions. You are 27 years old and it is time to grow up and take control of you."

Smith was ordered to stay away from Ms Pearman, who is a reporter with the Bermuda Sun.

Smith had previously admitted a charge of making a threat to kill.
