A single father was fined $1,800 after he admitted assaulting an officer and failing to stop because his bike was unlicensed and uninsured.
Avonn Brown, 40, was riding along South Road in Paget near the junction of White Sands Road on March 5 when police officers saw him driving between vehicles, creating a third lane.
PC Simmons stepped in the road and tried to stop Brown, telling him to pull over.
Brown tried to ride around her and wouldn’t stop.
PC Simmons then put her arm out to stop him and Brown struck her arm, causing her little finger to bend back. He then rode away.
Brown attended HamiltonPolice Station the next day where he was arrested.
He told the officers hethought PC Simmons was going to push him off his bike so he rode off because he needed to pick up his seven-year-old son from school.
Addressing the court, Brown said: “As far a the driving without due care, I overtook one car.
“I was talking to the officers last evening that you're not supposed to overtake anything anywhere where there’s a yellow line.
“I wasn’t really paying attention to the colour of the line.”
He continued: “I didn’t stop because the bike was unlicensed. I had to pick up my son and that’s the reason I didn’t stop.
“I didn’t hit the officer. She put her hand out and it looked like she was trying to push me off my bike.”
Brown was given a total of $1,800 in fines- $500 for assaulting the officer, $500 for failing to stop, $250 for an unlicensed bike and $250 for no insurance.
