Bermuda’s ‘walking man’ Damon Fox has been invited to take part in this year’s Catlin End-to-End event.
The popular wanderer who spends his days clocking up scores of miles across the island was featured in the Bermuda Sun early this year.
And his uplifting story attracted the attention of the End-to-End committee, which organizes the annual event. They have offered Mr Fox the chance to take part in the event for free and set him up with a sponsorship page.
And the 37-year-old, who wears size 14 sneakers, has said yes.
He will now join thousands of other walkers, bikers and runners for the big event on May 4.
Mr Fox told the Sun: “I don’t think I have ever done St George’s to Dockyard in one day before and I have never been a part of the End-to-End so this will be something brand new for me.
“I’m looking forward to it.
“And it will be good to walk with peers too as I normally just walk on my own.
“It will probably take me around six hours to get to Somerset, I might even run a little bit of the way. I would like to be first but we’ll see.”
He added: “Since the article appeared in the paper a lot more people have waved at me while I am out walking. People shout my name and say hello all over the place now.
“It’s been nice.”
Catlin End-to-End Committee member, Chris Burns, said: “When we read the original article in the Bermuda Sun about Damon, we at the Catlin End-To-End were all very moved by his story.
“The chain of events that have led to his current situation are very sad but his attitude and how he is dealing with his past is also very inspiring.
“Our mission at the Catlin End-to-End is to raise financial assistance and the profile of those in need in Bermuda; obviously we are also big advocates of walking and all the benefits that it provides physically and mentally.
“Damon’s story is testament to that and we wanted to offer him the opportunity to be part of our event doing something that he clearly loves.
“So we are giving him free entry to the walk this year and look forward to him being part of this year’s event on Saturday May 4. We hope Damon enjoys it and will be part of the event for many years to come.”
