A cricket club left reeling after a man was stabbed to death in its parking lot is to review its security and install extra surveillance cameras.
Elton Caisey, president of Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club, where 21-year-old electrician Verneil Richardson was stabbed in the early hours of Wednesday, added the club had also cancelled all booked private parties in the meantime.
Mr Caisey said: “It didn’t happen in the club, it happened near the Jamaican Grill.
“The cameras don’t cover all of the parking lot — we have to upgrade our cameras.”
Mr Caisey added: “It was a shock, but we have reassured everyone that everything at the club will be okay and that we have taken steps to ensure the safety of our members.”
And he said: “We still don’t know what exactly happened, so we will have to wait and see what the police tell us.”
Mr Caisey added: “We send our condolences to the family of the young man.”
He said that Mr Richardson was not a member of the club and was not a regular patron.
And he added: “This is something which happened and it’s very
unfortunate and we will have to deal with it.”
The club already has CCTV cameras inside and some outside, as well as security staff on duty at all events, as well as a zero tolerance policy on troublemakers.
A friend of Mr Richardson’s family, who live in Hamilton Parish, said the family had lived in the US for several years before returning to the island.
The friend, who asked not to be named, added: “He was an electrician and an up-and-coming star in his field. It is a tragic thing.”
The news came as police announced they had detained 34-year-old Adam Leroy King in connection with the incident after they announced he was a “person of interest” in the inquiry.
Mr King turned himself into police after he was named at a press conference on Wednesday.
