A star athlete has struck gold – a $1,500 sports scholarship courtesy of the island’s Caledonian Society.
Zekiah Lewis from Warwick was chosen for the new scholarship after a deal struck by organisers of the hugely successful Highland Games, held at Saltus Field earlier this month.
In lieu of rent for the grounds, the organising committee agreed to fund a sports scholarship for a student – and Ms Lewis, a sports all-rounder was the recipient.
Today, Ms Lewis, 12, the daughter of Troy and Nicole Lewis, from Warwick, was given the cheque, which will help fund her sporting ambitions.
Ian Hind, who helped organise the games, said: “She was selected due to her participation and enormous enthusiasm towards the various schools and inter-house teams she represents.
“She is very reliable and is a dedicated team member and always exhibits sportsmanship no matter the result.
“She particularly excels in track and field, netball and gymnastics and has represented Saltus in basketball, football, cricket, swimming and softball.
“She is a natural team leader and her potential is endless.”
The young athlete will leave on Thursday for Curacao to represent Bermuda in the junior CAC games in the a variety of events, including the 800m, high jump, long jump and cricket ball throwing.
She was presented with the cheque today by Mr Hind at the Saltus Grammar School flagpole.
The Caledonian Society also funds an annual scholarship for students who opt to study at a Scottish university or college.
