A St George’s man admitted attacking his ex-girlfriend in her Southampton home.

Michael Douglas, 34, punched Susanna Gomez-Araujo repeatedly, slammed her head against a wall and kicked her in the head on June 14.

He pleaded guilty to unlawfully wounding Gomez-Araujo.

The court heard the victim and Mr Douglas were at her Colony Valley, Southampton home on the evening of June 14 when they got into an argument.

Ms Gomez-Araujo then asked Douglas to leave and went inside to her bedroom.

Douglas refused to leave and followed her inside. He then punched her on her nose.

Crown counsel Nicole Smith said: “The complainant tried to close the door but the defendant forced the door open and grabbed her with both hands and pulled her out of the bedroom.

“The defendant then pushed the complainant into a wall, causing her head to come into contact with the wall.”

The court heard Ms Gomez-Araujo started to bleed from the head and yelled out to her roommate, Mikel Martinez, to call the police.

Mr Martinez tried to call the police on his cell phone, but Douglas began to chase him around the room to stop him.

He then threw a beer can at him, but missed.

Douglas then allegedly said: “As long as you live in Bermuda, you need to watch your back. I’m going to cut your head off.”

Mr Martinez got out of the house and ran to a neighbour’s home.

Still inside of the house, Douglas took Ms Gomez-Araujo’s cell phone from her.

He then punched her in the face numerous times.

When Ms Gomez-Araujo fell to the ground, Douglas kicked her in the forehead and grabbed her around the neck.

He allegedly said: “If you don’t leave the island, I will kill you and your friends.”

Police arrived and the complainant was treated for her injuries.

She was then taken to hospital via ambulance. Douglas was arrested nearby.

Addressing the court, Douglas claimed he went to the victim’s home after going for a swim and then handed her his pay for the week to hold for him.

He said he then received a phone call and had to leave, causing Ms Gomez-Araujo to get upset.

“She started to hit me and all that there. Then we got into a scuffle.

‘This is the first time I’ve went up for something like this.

“It makes me look like a woman beater. It looks bad.

“I’ve been in custody since Friday and I’ve had a lot of time to think about it.

“I wish I just walked out of the house.”

Douglas was also charged with uttering threatening words to Ms Gomez-Araujo and Mr Martinez on the same day and endangering Mr Martinez.

He denied those charges and will stand trial on July 22.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned the matter for sentencing on

August 6.

Douglas was remanded into custody.
