Nahki Wells’ incredible scoring ability on the pitch has earned him the People and Places Award of Excellence at the 23rd annual Best of Bermuda Awards.
The Bradford City player was unable to attend the ceremony held at Red Steakhouse and Bar yesterday evening but those who attended rose to the occasion in support of Bermuda’s rising talent.
Wells’ was also voted Best Bermuda Booster in the same category.
The professional footballer, who joined Bradford in 2011, has wowed not only his Bermudian country men but captured the hearts of football fans the world over. The Bermudian Magazine, which organizes the awards, said: “There is little doubt that the Premier League will come knocking on Wells’ door and when it does, everyone will be shouting ‘Nah-Nah-Nahki Wells!’”.
The much-loved Bermuda Bookstore won the top prize in the Shopping and Services category. Owner Hannah Willmott said that while the store is struggling, along with many retail outlets, she is happy to say that there are still people out there who are passionate about books.
AS Cooper took home the top award for Clothing and Accessories for the second time since 2009. The family owned business was commended for its “outstanding consistency, selection, quality and service.”
Managing director Somers Cooper, who collected the award on the night, put the success down to “a major team effort”.
Finally the Award of Excellence for Food, Drink and Entertainment went to new kid on the block, Red Steakhouse and Bar. General manager David Madeiros praised his staff including his executive chef Veronica Mal and team of managers. Red Steakhouse also took home the award in the sub-category Ambience.
The 2012 General Election was voted News Event of the Year in the People and Places category in a year that saw the first change of government in 14 years while Premier Craig Cannonier was named Most Effective Politician. The Bermudian Magazine wrote: “It’s no easy feat convincing a country to side with a year-old opposition party in a general election but OBA leader Craig Cannonier did just that.
The Bermuda Sun’s own columnist Larry Burchall took home the award for Best Critical Columnist for the fourth consecutive year. He was praised for being “trusted above all to analyze Bermuda’s political, social and economic scenes.
