For Steve Moorhouse the voyage into Bermuda last Friday brought back memories of his first foreign deployment 21 years ago.

The current Commander of HMS Lancaster was last on the island in January 1992 on board the warship HMS Brazen.

He was just a young officer under training at the time, and it was his first trip abroad with the Royal Navy.

Commander Moorhouse told the Bermuda Sun: “It was quite an emotional moment for me, coming back to place where I really started my Naval career.

“And to be able to bring Lancaster in as her Commander was a real honour.

“I’m sure lots of things have changed since back in 1992, but it is still a huge privilege to be part of the Navy’s enduring connection with the island.

“In a way it seems my career has come full circle in the last 21 years.”

On Commander Moorhouse’s first visit to Bermuda HMS Brazen docked at HMS Malabar up near Dockyard.

While on this occasion he brought HMS Lancaster into Hamilton.

He added: “It was a little bit different arriving in Bermuda this time compared to the last time I was here.

“In 1992 we stayed at HMS Malabar and were about to embark on a three-month deployment to the Caribbean. I remember we played against the Police rugby team and were thoroughly beaten.

“This time we were greeted by the sight of two huge cruise liners alongside at Dockyard. We all appreciate the historical links between the Navy and Bermuda and it has been an honour to be a part of this long and enduring partnership.”
