If you heard the name ‘The Black Pearl’ one would naturally think about Johnny Depp trying to acquire treasures in Disney’s hit movie series Pirates of the Caribbean.
However, Bermuda’s The Black Purl offers up a different kind of yarn.
The store has opened door in May and offers up a treasure chest of different colours of yarns for the knitter.
The Black Purl had its first class for beginners last week and this Thursday it will start its Itch for Stitch sessions, where people can gather at the Front Street store to chat while knitting.
Irena Ashton, owner, has been an avid knitter for many years. Motivated by the limited variety of knitting supplies on the island she decided to import her own selection of yarns and started selling them at local markets.
Mrs Ashton told the Bermuda Sun since The Black Purl opened “I’ve already had a lot of repeat customers. Everything is going great. People are coming in and getting to know where the store is and coming back.”
She added the customers have been giving her positive feedback which is helping her craft the store’s stock to meet their needs.
“When fall starts, that’s when it really starts to kick in and people really start knitting. In the summer people tend to pick up smaller projects, but I have a lot of diehards who knit no matter what season it is.”
Two ladies showed up for the first beginner’s class last Thursday.
“They showed up and we had a great time. It was really fun. People can still join and it’s on Thursdays from 5pm to 6pm.
“And this week I’m having a knitting social. I’m calling it the Itch for Stitch. I have one gentleman who is going to join, who would be the first man. That’s from 6pm to 7:30pm or so.”
The store is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10:30-5pm and Saturday from 2-4pm.
