Recently we have heard much use and abuse of the term “Time for Change” it worked well for political purposes. However, let’s look closer at real fundamental change.
Diets
We need to change how we eat. Too many of us are becoming ill or dying prematurely because of what we digest daily. We consume too much fatty foods and starches.
Change our diets to more fiber and whole grain.
Give up that overabundance of red meat and eat more lean meat and green leafy vegetables. Our bodies will love that change.
Elders
We need to change how we deal with our elders. Far too often we look at someone as “past their prime” because they have retired.
If anything they are the living libraries of information and life experiences we can never Google or download.
Cherish every moment we can with them let them know the sacrifices they have made on our behalf will never go unnoticed or unappreciated. When they are going through their mental and or physical changes, so too we must change and assist them during this time.
Dollars and Sense
We need to change how we view and handle our personal finances.
External forces will change our IB structure forever. The Leaders of the G8 countries inclusive of Germany, UK, US will convene in Ireland shortly.
At the top of their agenda is to radically alter the ability for individuals and or companies to avoid paying taxes. Let’s be honest, this will have an effect on us. So I suggest we stop spending in excess and aggressively save. The rainy day is coming. Change is here.
Anti-Classism
We need to change how we view and socialize with each other. We have a growing social economic divide which is creating pockets of classism.
We judge each other by the vehicles we drive or the schools our children attend or where and how we live. This is as discriminatory as racism and sexism. One’s income does not determine ones outcome.
Media mainpulation
We need to change how we receive and believe any and everything posted in the media.
Over the last few years with the advent of Facebook, Bernews and Twitter, digital information has become a daily flood of updates and page refreshers.
However, much of the information is slanted in one way or the other to direct our views in one direction or the other.
Take five minutes to research the facts, before accepting a news sound bite as the gospel and forming an opinion. Reading is fundamental.
Post Election Change
You see, we saw political change in November 1998 and in December 2012. Yet, ask ourselves, how much has changed for us socially, economically and health wise?
Then ask what changes we have to make as individuals and as a collective community?
Change does not begin and end on Election Day. Positive changes begin with us as Bermudians seeking a better way for ourselves our families and our island home.
Bermuda we stand committed to change ourselves as individuals for the better.
More importantly to collectively change the PLP, to not only be a government, but to strengthen our commitment to be the driving force of comprehensive social uplifting for all Bermudians. We invite you to join with us for real fundamental social and community change.
Change is now.
Marc Bean is the Leader of the Opposition.
