A St David’s man who beat a boy with a cricket bat was today remanded into custody.

Glen Fox, 46, admitted beating the student with the bat on Monday near the Gulf Stream emergency housing.

The boy was on the playground of the property at 4:50pm that day playing cricket when he was approached by Fox.

Fox said: "I'm going todeal with you, you little a**."

He then took the bat out of his hands and struck him with it repeatedly.

The boy fell to the ground and Fox continued to hit him with the bat.

A resident of Gulf Stream broke up the altercation and Fox was later confronted by the boy’s father.

The boy was taken to hospital where he was treated for bruises to his body.

Fox was arrested and admitted in a police interview to “cutting the boy’s a**”.

In court, Duty Counsel Oonagh Vaucrosson, said Fox claimed the boy was gang affiliated who was disrupting the area.

She said: "He's taken it upon himself to right the wrongs he feels the complainant has been doing in the community.

"It's unfortunate that he assaulted the complainant but he was trying to put a stop to the havoc he was doing in the area. "

Fox then explained that he loves children and often takes many of the kids who live in the area on boating trips, fishing and other activities because they don’t have fathers.

But Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said: “He hadn’t got any right being around children period.

“This is how you treat the children you help without fathers?”

Fox then said: “Everyday you look in the paper and see gang bangers. I deal with one and I’m the bad guy.”

He also claimed the complainant got other children in the area to steal for him and brought other “gang bangers” to Gulf Stream.

Mr Warner said his behaviour was “totally unacceptable”.

“Children obviously need discipline but you can’t go around taking cricket bats and assaulting people.”

Mr Warner ordered pre-sentencing reports and remanded Fox into custody until July 23.
