Imagine yourself in a glass bottom kayak with fish teeming about.
If you’re in Bermuda, you might as well enjoy the water and two new companies have set up shop at Daniel’s Head to help you do just that.
Surf SUP and Crystal Clear Kayaks recently opened at the former Nine Beaches property.
Larry Fox, owner of Surf SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) told the Bermuda Sun his company has been in business since the end of May.
“I came to Bermuda to be on the water. I spent 26 years with the Police, with many of those years in the Marine Section.”
After a stint in the reinsurance industry, Mr Fox yearned to get back outdoors to what he loved.
“I missed being out on the water, which is what I came out here to do.
“The shop at Daniel’s Head had been empty for the last three years and I thought it was the best location in the world for wind surfing and paddle boarding.
“I couldn’t believe it was vacant. I made contact with the owners and they rented it to me.”
While he does a lot of business for people, mostly women, who are interested in stand up paddleboarding, Mr Fox also has windsurfing rigs for rent.
It was his rigs that were used for the just concluded NatWest island Games.
“I hope that encourgaes to get people back into windsurfing like it was big in the ‘80s.”
Krista Dyer, a tour operator at Crystal Clear Kayaks, said one of the most popular trips was the sunset tour where the kayaks are outfitted with LED lighting.
“We’re doing those on Wednesdays, Thursday and Fridays, which are the most popular days.
“When the idea was first pitched to me I thought ‘kayaking on the water at night, it sounds kind of dangerous’ but my breath was taken away the first time I saw it.
“Any sort of doubt I had in my mind melted away because it was quite a sight to see.”
She added the lights are bright enough to be spotted by other boaters so there is no worry about any collisions.
She said typical fish seen are chub and bream but snappers or sergeant majors can also be spotted.
Ms Dyer added: “This is quite popular with our visitors. You couldn’t be any closer to the fish without touching them.”
The shop has 10 kayaks and are designed for either one or two people.
