Letter: Could you open up more space for the animals at the zoo?
Dear Sir,
I am writing to you regarding a recent trip my husband and I took to your gorgeous island; but also to voice a concern and to ask a question.
My husband and I had talked about visiting Bermuda for a number of years, but for whatever reason, it wasn’t possible until this year.
It was worth the wait! We had such a fabulous time which included staying at the Kingston House Bed and Breakfast run by the amazing Harry and Marlie Powell; along with Digby the dog.
We found the Bermudians extremely friendly and helpful no matter where we were on the island.
One of the excursions we took was to the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum, and Zoo.
The aquarium was comprehensive and very educational. We could tell that the children there where fully engaged by what they were experiencing. We then ventured over to the zoo.
Here is where my concern comes in. I understand that space is limited and, most likely, so is funding; however, the habitats that were provided for the animals were far from adequate in my opinion.
I’d like to focus on the otters. When we have visited other zoos, the otters are swimming, running, climbing, and playing with various toys in and around the water.
None of the otters were swimming... Instead, they were in the back corner of their habitat digging and chewing at the wooden door trying to get out.
One of the otters saw my husband and I and came towards us. He laid on the rocks and began whining — he seemed distressed. It was heartbreaking.
We realize that we aren’t zoologist, nor do we have a degree in any area of animal care; but as animal lovers my husband and I couldn’t dismiss the troubling feeling we left with.
My question to you is: Is there anything being done to better the zoo, not only for the otters, but for the other animals as well?
Fundraising? Private donations? Government subsidies?
Thank you for any insight you can share on this matter.
