Countries and states around the western world are opening up to gay marriage. Gays scored two major legal victories in the US recently and same-sex marriages look set to become ubiquitous. Bermuda has always been in the honeymoon business, so should we be marketing specifically to gays? Mikaela Ian Pearman found out.

Schuyler Ruberry, 23

Audio engineer

‘I don’t think they have to target tourism towards the gay audience necessarily. They are very welcome here, most definitely. By all means, please come.’

    Cade Stallard, 20

Student

‘I think tourism should be open to all kinds of markets, genders and sexes. It shouldn’t be restricted by traditionalist values.’

Lisabet Outerbridge, 43

Entrepreneur

‘All people should feel welcome to visit our island. The gay community should be made to feel as welcome as any other group through our advertising.’

Rebecca Foggo, 28

Sales associate

‘Not that they should be targeted, but nobody should be discriminated against for what they are. Humans are humans. They’re going to spend money either way.’

Tatem Ford, 29

IT

‘We shouldn’t target them but we shouldn’t discriminate against them, either.’

Stephen Daniels, 63

Teacher

‘They should visit as long as they respect the rules of the country. We should be friendly towards all people.’
