Young stars serve notice
Tyler Smith, Rikai Burrows and Christopher Rego competed in the ITF 13 and Under Caribbean Development Championships from August 11 to 17.
Under-13 head coach Brent Smith was proud of his charges saying "They did really well. They were all fighters."
Bermuda was up against 14 other countries and finished 10th overall. Smith said: "We didn't finish at the top, but we didn't finish at the bottom either. This was a good competition."
Smith added the exposure will help the young Bermudians mature into better tennis players and gives them an opportunity to stretch themselves.
"Tyler Smith was the most experienced (of the Bermuda players) and she did the best. She finished in the top two in her group."
Tyler Smith, 11, finished 11th overall.
"In the first round she had to face the girl who played in the final," Brent Smith said. "She played really well but lost 6-1, 7-5. The next match was a disappointment as Tyler had match point against her opponent when the weather stopped the match. When it was resumed the next day the girl got her act together and beat Tyler."
Rego finished second in his group, but only the top five second place finishers got to go on to the next round and Rego was seeded 14th because of the number of games he had lost.
Rego then played well in the consolation bracket working his way all the way to the final before losing and ended the tournament as the 14th best player out of 28.
Burrows was third in his round robin group and finished 25th overall, but Smith said "He played well in the consolation."
