Winning the Classic isn't everything

Lions coach says playing within the spirit of the game is more important

Lions coach Allan Martin has urged all teams at this year's Classic to play within the spirit of the game.

He said a "win at all costs" approach would detract from the ethos of the eagerly anticipated tournament.

Mr. Martin said: "The Classic was set up during the amateur era and it was all about the banter between the players and the camaraderie associated with rugby.

"We've moved on since then and we're in the professional era and with that has come a more competitive edge.

"There's nothing wrong with that - we all love the game and we play it to win.

"But I just worry that it can be taken too seriously at times and the win at all costs mentality kicks in.

"The Classic is a really special event and I want everyone to remember why that is.

"We try really hard to keep the players in the over 30 bracket and I hope that continues this year."

The Lions, who are the defending champions this year, were hit with bad news at the last minute when outside half Brian O'Meara had to pull out for a teaching exam.

Mr. Martin said: "It is a blow to us - he is a guy who can break a defence and he is a shrewd operator.

"It's a hard schedule this year - three games in a week - and with a 21-player limit on the squad - it's going to be tough.

"But we have some great players - Colin Charvis and Mark Regan - are big names with big reputations."

The Lions face the U.S. in their first game at 4pm on Sunday.

And if they defeat the Eagles they will face either Australia or France in the next round.

Mr. Martin said: "You never know what's going to happen when you get off that plane and hit the pitch - the first game is always a tough one.

"The lads are going to be tired so it's all about who wants it most and who rises to the challenge.

"We have a good chance of retaining our crown - we have a great squad but the other teams are very strong this year too."

"The Pumas are always formidable opponents - they are tough as old boots - and the big three of South Africa, New Zealand and South Africa are never easy to play against.

"But we'll be giving it our best shot and I know we are all looking forward to it a great deal."[[In-content Ad]]
