Whitter, Jones grab podium spots in Miami

Bermuda’s top motorcycle riders showed they can mix it with the best at recent races in Spain and the U.S.

Three of our best riders won top four finishes in a CCS Champions Cup race in Miami, earlier this month.

And two junior riders also made an impact at the Mini-GP Festival in Valencia, a week later.

Bermuda GP 125 champion Cyril Whitter III, David Jones and Jevaughn Simons competed in the 'amateur' section of the race, riding on rented 900cc Ducatis.

Whitter said they were classed as amateurs based on their lack of experience of racing in the U.S.

He said the speed of the bikes, up to 140mph, and the length of the track, more than two miles, had taken some getting used to.

But the riders had settled in and shown what they could do with some impressive finishes.

Whitter got a third and two seconds, Simons got two fourths and a sixth and Jones got a third, a sixth and a seventh. There were between 30 and 35 riders in each race.

All three hope to race in the States again next year.

The trio, along with Marvin Robinson and Paul DeCouto, successfully completed their race licenses during the trip to enable them to compete on the American circuit.

“We had to start from the back of the pack and work our way through. Personally, for my first time racing at this level, I was pretty satisfied.

“I was particularly pleased to do so well on a rented bike.”

He added that he hoped to race again next year in the GP 125 class on a bike he is more familiar with.

Whitter said he had also accompanied 11-year-old Toriano Trott and nine-year-old Keanu Wilson on their trip to Valencia to compete in the Mini-GP Festival.

He said the pair had done amazingly well against the best riders in the world. “For their first time they did well. They were up against some of the best kids in the world. “It was mainly just a good experience for them and they were offered to come back next year.” He said the youngsters had been racing on powerful bikes at speeds of up to 100mph -—much faster than they are used to in Bermuda.[[In-content Ad]]
