Which game is better?
2k6 or MLB ‘06 The Show?
That’s bad for 2K Sports but good for fans. Without competition, sports games would have no incentive to improve.
The good news: Both games are good. Very good.
Both feature the usual assortment of modes, including Season, Franchise, Career, Create-A-Player and mini-games.
Both feature online connectivity, which means updated rosters and the ability to play against opponents over the Internet.
And both look great, no matter what system you’re using.
But 2K6 is a bit more detailed and lifelike than MLB ‘06. I saw a player’s batting helmet fly off during his sprint to first base. I saw players stumble as they rounded the bases. I saw a plane bound for New York’s LaGuardia Airport flying above Shea Stadium.
In the field, despite the occasional choppy animation, I like how players move in 2K6. In the Xbox 360 version of 2K6, fans in the bleachers will even scramble after foul balls. 2K Sports clearly understands that it’s the little details that makes a sports game great.
2K6 also has a slight edge with its largely alt-rock soundtrack.
MLB ‘06, however, has vastly superior in-game commentary.
But all this stuff is nothing more than window dressing.
Strip away the graphics, soundtrack and commentary, and we’’re left with the gameplay.
And in this department, 2K6 clearly has the edge.
