Where are the 'landmarks' of a moral upbringing in youth?
This scripture verse is just one of a host of equally powerful and wise set of instructions laid out for us in God's Holy Word, The Bible. Here, Solomon is encouraging the reader (the obedient reader) not to remove that which has been established by our forefathers.
The picture we must get here is that of land or property. Let's say that you won this land and next to your property, is another person's property. Their property is for sale. Be assured of this, that before any new transactions are made concerning the purchase of the new property, the land will be surveyed so that the boundaries can be established. During this process, that land will be "staked". In other words, the boundaries of that land will be clearly and legally marked.
Bermuda, this is important. For if the land is not staked, the person desiring to purchase the new land might very well be tempted to secure more land than they are entitled. Hence, we ought not remove the old landmarks.
Well, today my concern is not necessarily towards the landmarks of the property in Bermuda but rather my concern is towards the landmarks or lessons of morality amongst our younger and actually slightly older generations.
Where are the landmarks of solid parenting, neighbourly kindness, and, in general, a care towards our fellow men? Let me share with you what has prompted this article.
Last Friday, at the grocery store in front of me there was a young man, aged about 24. I spoke to him and noticed a mark on his neck. He had tattooed on his neck "Killa ......". Having been a teacher/
mother in our education system, I immediately began to speak to the young man. "What is that you have tattooed on your neck? Killa? Is that your name? Is that what your mother named you?" His response was (of course) "Yes" (as he turned and began to leave). I then informed him that by having this word tattooed on his neck, he was speaking a purpose over his life that God had not given to him. Of course, by this time his back was completely turned and he was on his way out.
Bermuda. Families. What have we done! We have removed old landmarks and allowed our sons and daughters to establish new landmarks of their own making. They are branding themselves with all sorts of demonic writing. They have forsaken the writing of The Holy Word of God and replaced them with evil writings.
I do not understand how a father or mother can allow his or her son to live at home, knowing that the child's mentality is not one that is conducive to a prosperous life. How can parents house children who have removed the ancient landmarks of peace, hope, joy, and love?
Even sadder, we can pretty much imagine, what our tattooed males are teaching their children and hence setting up as the "new and improved" landmarks. Need we mention the number of males who have claimed (staked out) land (property) that is not even theirs (gangs)?
The old landmarks of Bermuda were: honesty, hard work, self-discipline, manners, respect for God, respect towards elders, and neighbourly care towards others
The new landmarks being established are: lying to get what one wants, the easy way, no discipline, unmannerly, no reverence of God or those things which are sacred, respect for no one, no care towards anyone outside of those who operate with the same lack of decency
Bermuda, it is time to re-establish the old landmarks. We must do this for those who are to follow. This present generation, and their mindset, will result in the destruction of our Island. Why would folk want to come and visit a 20-mile island where the natives are afraid of the unruly and the unruly are afraid of no one.
There must be a reestablishing of the landmarks established by our seniors. The Bermuda we see today is not what they worked hard to bring about. No! This current place is a result of a people, who have largely forgotten God - forgotten the ultimate Landmark of all. Let us return to God! Respice finem.
