FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14: Today I start the column again after taking the summer off to focus on some of my programmes. Yes, I enjoyed the break, but really missed writing the column and touching people’s lives.
But before I get into my topic of leadership this week, I want to take this time to thank the parents, young people, staff and volunteers that participated in the HSBC pro soccer clinic this summer. I appreciate all your support each year and strongly recognized that without you the clinic will never have had the success these last 22 years.
So what does it take to be a leader?
For me a leader is more than just showing up and saying I am in charge, I am the boss, I am the captain or I am the owner.
You need to understand how to motivate, teach, trust, guide and be responsible for your actions. Some leaders take for granted of their responsibility and get wrapped up in the entitlement, which has become a serious killer of having a successful business, team or family.
Many of us who become leaders sometimes do not understand the value and voice we have, it is amazing how many leaders do not recognize what effect they have on the others.
You may wonder what are some tips on how to be a better leader.
Here are a few areas that should be considered:
A leader must be focused
They must constantly remind themselves and the group of their goals and mission. If they stay on track and keep others on track, the team will stay motivated and be more productive.
A leader should be organized
A leader has to set the tone for the team. A leader who is organized helps motivate team members to be organized as well.
A leader must make themselves available
As a leader, you’re responsible for a lot and you’re probably going to be very busy at times. However, you still need to find time to talk with your team.
A leader must include others
A leader should not do all the work. Doing everything yourself is a poor use of time and prevents your venture from growing. Instead, a leader should work with his/her teammates and learn how to delegate responsibility while being mindful of everyone’s interests, goals, and strengths.
A leader must be confident
This could be the most important characteristic of a leader. If you don’t believe in yourself and the success of your venture, no one else will.
I hope that this guide helps and gives many some idea of what it will take to lead. As my business friend Rick told me “there is a huge difference of respect from earning the leadership role, than been given it”
Until next time!
