We did better than I expected

Everyone expected a lot of big things from St. David's this season and although we didn't win the league I was pleased with the way we played.

We accomplished more than I thought we would after losing so many players in the off-season and with half of our squad on national duty throughout the summer.

We won the 20-20, we won the Open Cricket, we dominated Eastern County.

We had one bad tournament and that was the league.

At the start of the season anyone in their right mind would have picked Social Club or Southampton Rangers for the league because they don't have any players in the national squad.

St. David's will always be depleted because we produce so many good players.

All credit to Social Club, though. Charlie Marshall has been great for them again this year. With the level of cricket the way it is in Bermuda he could play forever.

Ricky Hoyt, the guy from Barbados, has been a good addition to their squad over the past couple of years. I believe he played youth level for West Indies so he's a good player at this level. Hats off to them, you can't take anything away from what they have accomplished.

There's been a few changes this season and I'm not sure they've all worked.

We won the Open Cricket but I can't say it was a great success.

I think it is necessary to play some longer version cricket for development purposes but it was probably at the wrong time of year.

It might have made more sense at the beginning of the season to get people in-form and then to end the year with 20-20.

I honestly feel the clubs need to step forward and run better programmes. The talent is out there but for whatever reason young people aren't coming to play for the clubs.

The BCB's got some good youth programmes in place now and we need to be more vigilant about getting people involved.

Brangman and Gilbert will be missed

It was a sad day at St. David's this weekend as we held a charity match and a wake for Maxie Brangman and Freddie Gilbert.

Those are two guys we could never replace. They were permanent fixtures at the club and our biggest fans in football and cricket.

Maxie, in particular, was the first person there at every game. It's sad that something like this could happen, and they are going to be missed around the club.

They would always talk to me before and after games, tell me if I'd played well or not or just ask me to have a drink with them.

We host a match between the Commercial side and the Premier side each year with the money raised going to a worthy cause.

This year it went to the families of Max and Freddie. The game only lasted ten overs and it was rained out but we had a wake down at the club for them, the rest of the afternoon.

It's really sad for our community that this has happened. We never forget the people that have been part of our club.
