Warwick Academy tells the secret of its success

FRIDAY, SEPT. 7: A firm focus on the core subjects helped Warwick Academy achieve a record number of A and A* grades at IGCSE.

This is according to principal Maggie McCorkell, who reaffirmed the school’s commitment to ensure its students will continue to take all five of the core subjects as part of their studies.  Just over 40 per cent of the grades achieved by the students at Warwick Academy were either A or A*.

Ms McCorkell told the Bermuda Sun: “We believe that a firm grounding in all the core subjects is just as important as it has ever been.

“It provides the students with a broader general knowledge that is recognized by universities across the world.

“Our students will continue to take all the core subjects of English, maths, science, a humanity subject and a modern foreign language as we believe it provides the best platform for their further studies.

“And the fact that all of our students this year have fulfilled this requirement means that our results are all the more impressive.”

Forty-two of the 49 students who sat the IGCSE achieved five and more passes at A* through to C grades.

In each case they took included English, mathematics, a science, a humanity subject and a foreign language.

Students achieved an 86 per cent success rate with students taking an average of 9 subjects.

Two of the school’s top performers in this years GCSE’s are already eyeing a future in the medical profession.

Russell Conyers, 16, gained eight A* and one A, while Lindsay Fisher, 15, achieved seven A* and two A grades.

Lindsay said: “I still can not quite believe how well I managed to do in the end.

“I put in a lot of work in the mock exams and that put me in a good place when it came to the real thing

“It seemed like we had to wait forever for the results, but I spent some time with the Bermuda Overseas Mission in Paraguay over the summer and that helped the time to pass quickly.

“I’m hoping these results will help me follow a career in the medicine, but there’s a lot of work still to do before I get there.”

Russell added: “I was pretty surprised to be honest when I saw the results.

“It was a massive relief after a nerve-racking wait. I’m looking to set up some work experience with the hospital and also St John’s Ambulance in the next year to help me work towards a career in the medical profession.”
