WEDNESDAY, MAY 9: Warwick Academy slipped past Francis Patton 2-1 to lift the Girls rugby title.

Warwick coach Stanton Lewis said: “This feels good. I’m really excited for them. For a lot of them, this is their first year ever playing. They did play in the Primary School Rugby Tournament at Shelly Bay and they came in third so coming to this tournament, they came to have fun and enjoy themselves.

“They did the work that was asked and that was needed. They did that and they reaped the rewards from it. It was an exciting match.”

“Before this season, maybe only one or two had ever played rugby.”

Eden Robinson, team captain, not only helped her team win the championship but she also picked up the Sportsmanship Trophy.

Improved

“This is really great and it feels really good because last time we came third and we were hoping to get first and we got it.”

She said the reason Warwick was able to win this tournament after coming third at Shelly Bay was “we were practising more and we were working better as a team. There were a lot of good things we improved on from last time.”
