Uganda or UAE next up for cricket team
That match would be part of the ICC's Intercontinental Shield schedule that would see the cricket team also take on Namibia. Bermuda is playing in the second tier of associates after its ninth place finish at the World Cup qualifiers in South Africa in April.
Neil Speight, executive director for the Bermuda Cricket Board, said: "We're hoping to get Uganda or UAE to come here because Namibia came here last year."
Speight said the Namibia match would take place sometime in 2010 at their venue because Bermuda owes them a home game.
"The sooner I can sort out the matches the better, but I may not get it sorted out until the ICC have their annual conference next week."
He said that all three Intercontinental Shield matches must be played by the end of 2010.
"With us getting a new national coach it would be better for Bermuda to have two games next year and one game this year. With the three fixtures we would hope to get one of either the UAE or Uganda here in Bermuda this year and then we would expect to go away to Namibia and which ever one didn't come here."
Speight said the closing date to get an application in for the national coach position to replace Gus Logie closes on June 30. The executive director for the BCB added: "The board is keen to get someone as close in the calibre to Gus as we can. Everyone has a high regard for him and the job he's done and it is important for our programme to get a top-notch international coach. We're still in the High Performance Programme and we still have a lot of youngsters coming through.
"The last tournament we competed in South Africa, we had nine boys that were 25-years-old or younger with five of them coming out of the Under-19 World Cup from the year before. It would have been six if Malachi (Jones) hadn't had school commitments so we have a transitionary sort of side. Especially with Sluggo (Dwayne Leverock) Janeiro (Tucker) and Lionel (Cann) who are retiring so it's important that we help the young boys come along."
Speight said part of the qualifications for a new coach should include a proven track record in helping shape young talent.
"We're looking for someone who has at least a Level 3 (coaching award)," Speight said. "The coach currently sets the coaching philosophy for all the junior age groups. He would work with Arnold (Manders, cricket development director)."
He said in many ways the new head coach will have more influence over the youth programme than Logie did.
"It will be easier for him to have a more hands on approach with the youth than Gus because the sheer volume of fixtures will be lower."
Speight joked: "Before we had fixtures all over the place and we had to play away all the time so poor old Gus forgot where he lived I think."
