Track record broken twice in five minutes
First Ed Roque shaved a fifth of a second off the record, driving GV Crystal Ball to victory, in his heat.
Then, before Roque even had time to celebrate the feat, Catrina Sims, driving It's Speed Time, had broken the record again.
The new mark is 1:03-3, eclipsing the previous record, held by Nick DeCosta's GV Colonel Spence, by two fifths of a second.
Aaron Sims, who owns and trains the horse with his dad Roderick, said the family was delighted to have the fastest pony on the track.
"Colonel Spence has been the horse to beat for a long time. Then Speed Time came along and Eddie's got a fast horse, so every time the conditions have been right we've all been thinking, let's go out and try to break the record.
"Eddie was racing in the heat before us and when they called out his time we knew the track was right and we decided to go for the record as well."
Roque said he hadn't had time to enjoy the moment, before the record was snatched from him.
"I think I held the record for about four minutes. I wasn't that surprised to be honest. Sunday was one of those days where something like that can happen.
"The track was perfect, the temperature was right, everything was just how it was supposed to be."
Roque said he still had the stallion record to hold on to, but would be trying to beat Speed Time's overall record before the season was over.
"Everybody likes that bit of brass polish but hey, you get down there and have fun. I've just got a couple of horses and we're doing pretty good."
Sims said it was possible that the record could be broken again, if the conditions were right.
He added: "Speed Time is an awesome horse. We knew she was a special horse and we knew what she was capable of. It was just a matter of getting the right day."
He said the horse was treated like a true athlete and had it's own masseuse - Kelly Glazebrook - to help keep it in top condition between races.[[In-content Ad]]
