Straight off the bat / A player’s perspective
Tournament for big hitters has taken off
It was originally intended as a small thing to honour my grandfather, Lionel Mello, and raise some money for the needy in the St. David's community.
But people have been very interested and it's turned into something much bigger.
All my sponsors have been great. TigerMart is offering some giveaways and we've got some good prizes for the top players.
Now Real Deal, a wholesaler in St. David's, has come on board and they are offering a dollar-a-run to charity for every boundary.
They may be giving away quite a bit of money because this type of cricket is the ultimate in excitement. It's five-overs-a-side and short boundaries so you're going to see lots of big hitting.
We've got players like Chris Foggo, Delyone Borden, Clay Smith and Charlie Marshall and myself. It's going to be exciting.
It's been a really busy week putting this together. I thought it was just going to be a case of arranging the facility and a bit of lunch for the players but it's taken off. My sister said 'you've got have music' so now we've got Jugglin Jason, we've got tents and all the rest of it.
It's going to be a great way to start the season.
Entry is five dollars and the cricket goes on all day, starting at 9am with the final at 6pm. All the proceeds are going to charity.[[In-content Ad]]
