Time 'The People' took power back from politicians
I am a young Bermudian who feels that 'The People' need to take control of our Government and not the other way around.
It has always been my feeling that governments should change at least every two terms.
Having said that, this year is the year to make the change.
I say that because in doing so, no particular party would feel they can do as they please once they are in control. Changing the guard, so to speak, would at the least ensure that checks and balances are practiced and that no person or persons would get too comfortable in their roles. The change would facilitate above board practices, accounting controls, accountability, and perhaps motivate persons to do better than the next.
Good initiatives would go on to be fulfilled while bad ones revisited. Gone are the days where one practices allegiance at all cost to one particular party.
We need to think on a global level playing field. Thank goodness the days of the Bird dynasty of Antigua, the Duvalier dynasty of Haiti or the Qing dynasty of Taiwan controlling everything for years and years are over. Thank God for the change we made in 1998 in our own backyard. The time is ripe to make the change again before we repeat the past.
Bermuda's economy and welfare should not be based on allegiance but good business practices if we want to survive in the global world.
Secondly, going independent needs to be placed in the background as our independent associated friends to the south of us are in a recession at a time where Europe is trying to relinquish trading ties with them.
Bermuda should not be trying to move on our own under such daunting times. If anyone has any doubts about the implications of independence then investigate what one has to do to travel freely from any of our independent friends. If anyone is pushing independence, they do not have the people's interest but their own.
So people, let's take back control and ensure that the guard changes so that we show the politicians that 'The People' determine their future. And in one or two terms time, we ensure the change is made again.
