The UBP lost its most valuable asset when Ewart Brown ousted Jennifer Smith as leader of the PLP
The current situation with Mr. Simmons is not going to be responsible for the UBP losing the next election. Let's be serious, the UBP were not/ are not going to win anyway.
The UBP have been on a steady decline since the internal strife associated with Sir John's independence referendum. The best thing the UBP has had going for it in the last eight years was Dame Jennifer Smith. Unfortunately for the UBP but fortunately for the PLP, Dr. Brown stopped what could have led to a future PLP defeat by having her removed as party leader.
In my opinion the UBP as it currently exists cannot reclaim power. Unless the Premier does something that causes dissent within a majority of the black Bermudian population the PLP will remain in power for some time to come.
