Following the success of the Ministry of Education’s Adopt-a-School initiative, eight-year-old Samuel Bleeker thought schools should adopt beaches.
While researching for a science project on preserving the environment, Samuel came up with the idea for schools to maintain various beaches.
He wrote a letter to Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith with the suggestion, who then invited schools across the island to participate.
Dame Jennifer said the response was “astounding”, with most schools agreeing to take on a beach.
East End Primary has adopted Buildings Bay in St. George’s, which they will clean up and maintain.
Samuel’s mother Claire Bleeker said: “I think he’s very proud. It would be great if maybe the same day, every year, the schools would all do it on the same day.
She said so far, nine or 10 schools had said they were interested in the scheme.[[In-content Ad]]The Bermuda Sun bids farewell...
