The Parks Department has spent a week returning Bermuda to “its beautiful self” after Hurricane Igor. The priority of the 120 workers, which included tree surgeons, was to clear the roads of debris and cutting back branches.
They then tidied up the grounds of all the schools, before splitting the island into seven zones and tackling parks and beaches. They moved lots of felled trees and checked standing trees weren’t in danger of toppling. They also restored the sand dunes at Horseshoe Bay.
Steve Furbert, senior supervisor, said being the first crew on the road after the storm had been “a good team building exercise”.
He added: “The guys were very gung-ho and worked well together. It was tiring and we worked long hours but everyone under- stood the importance of returning Bermuda to its beautiful self.”
