The just concluded pony racing season saw the gelding set the track record and win the unofficial Triple Crown of all three stakes races.
Speed Time, driven by Catrina Sims, completed one of the greatest seasons at the Vesey Street Track this past weekend. Last Saturday saw the 12 fastest ponies face off in elimination races for Sunday's championship.
Speed Time won both its heats and then completed the perfect weekend by winning both heats on Sunday.
Speed Time was up against Nick DeCosta's GV Colonel Spence, Eddie Roque's Crystal Ball and Ricky Wilkinson's IC Flashy Ann out of Tanglewoods Stable.
Crystal Ball briefly held the track record year this year before Speed Time broke it and Colonel Spence was the long-time previous record holder.
Owner Aaron Sims said it wasn't easy. "We didn't have a rail. Both times we were in the middle."
"This was a real good season for us and for Spicelands," Sims said. "We had five or six of our ponies that ran their lifetime best this year. The fastest trotter this season was out of Spicelands as well with Randy Wilkinson and Sweet Dusty."
But it was Speed Time that set the track ablaze.
"Speed Time won all three stakes races this year - He won the age stake races on Boxing Day; he won the Best of Three; and he won the Champion of Champions. It wasn't the Triple Crown but everybody was calling it a Triple Crown win."
Sims said that even though Speed Time lowered the track record this year "he still has more to go. In the first heat on Sunday, he came out of the two hole and sat behind the rail pony for a lap before pulling around him and did 1:04 1/5. What would he have done on the rail?
"I honestly think we haven't seen all that he's got."
Sims said that Speed Time has run five or six races in the 1:04s besides setting the track record at 1:03 3/5.
"It definitely was a real good year."[[In-content Ad]]
