THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15: South Africa marched into the final of the World Rugby Classic last night after a powerful display against defending champions Argentina.

In horrendous conditions at the National Sports Centre, the Classic Springboks made fewer errors and were more clinical in a 17-7 win.

A ferocious downpour during France’s 14-0 win over USA in the plate semi-final had pushed the start of the last-four showdown back to 9pm.

A call-off looked possible as the rain continued to fall but the two teams shrugged it off and got down to business - and it was soon apparent South Africa were better equipped to deal with the conditions.

Scrum-half Neil Cole crashed over for any early try, allowing star Percy Montgomery – one of the main draws in his maiden Classic – to slot home the conversion.

Argentina were never going to lie down but the Classic Springboks had the killer instinct and they pounced on a Pumas error for their second try as Egon Seconds raced away to score after intercepting. Montgomery missed the conversion.

They added a third after the break – although Montgomery again missed the kick – before the Pumas scored a consolation through Lucas Borges, which was converted.

Tonight sees the second semi-final between the Classic Lions and Australia (8.30pm), preceded by the remaining plate semi-final (7.15pm) featuring Italy and Canada.
