Sneakers signal drug availability and gang area
Anyway, I come from the day when sneakers were meant to be worn on the feet. You know, we had the Reeboks, Pumas, Adidas, and Nike. Gee, let me confess I even had the no-name brands for the majority of my life. As long as they were white for gym, it was all good. Then as long as they were clean and still had a slight bounce in them, they were good enough for whatever the need was.
The most perplexing challenge I have had concerning sneakers these days has been to give my opinion to one of my older girls about whether or not their sneakers matched the outfit they were going to wear. Again, my thought about sneakers was always consistent. Sneakers were meant to be worn on the feet. So, imagine my surprise when about a month ago, I was told that a sign of gang activity was sneakers placed over wires. It sounded weird, but they were convinced and they convinced me. However, some things you just have to see for yourself.
So, this past Saturday, I was driving through the Warwick Khyber Pass area onto South Shore and I happened to look up and see a pair of brightly coloured sneakers hanging over the wire. I couldn't believe it. There they were. All right, perhaps I was over-reacting. Perhaps, those sneakers were just a part of some adolescent prank. Perhaps, some children were just playing games.
Well, that could be so. However, what if those sneakers were actually a sign that "the supermarket was open", or a sign that the area had been marked as gang territory. Well, what also amazed me was that I first saw the sneakers on my way to an engagement and then three hours later, I saw that they were still there. The real disappointment set in when I recalled that I had passed about three police officers on my way to the engagement.
I was so sure that by the time I was on my way back home those sneakers would have been removed. Who knows? Perhaps, those sneakers belonged to some child who was in need of them. Perhaps. However, what if those who are illegally trafficking drugs are so very confident and comfortable showcasing that their goods are now ready to be filtered throughout the Island of Bermuda. I do not know what is going on. However, I do hope that this column is just one of the many efforts to make the public aware of what is going on.
Yes, I am getting this information very late. However, now that I know, I will be on the lookout for those sneakers hanging over wires. What a shame when the killers of our future's dreams and visions can so freely decorate this lovely island in such a way.
Did I miss an evening report about this? Did I miss a news article on this? How sad. While we are fussing over the latest episode in the mis-education of our children, the drug dealers are educating our children on the misuse of drugs.
Now, I read today, that with every shipment of drugs allowed in this island, there are guns that accompany them.
You know what. This fight can only be fought and won through spiritual warfare. Unless we turn our hearts and our minds back to God, the enemy of our soul will continue to destroy the souls of our children. Like it or not, Bermuda, this battle must be fought on our knees, in prayer. Prayer still changes things. The devil is real and his ways are designed to win our people to a life of immediate gratification through whatever means necessary, and then watch that way lead to certain death. No, the death may not be physical. It can be financial, social, educational, or emotional.
Parents, be sure that when you and your children are discussing sneakers, that you are talking about the ones they ought to be wearing to school and not the ones that they will be throwing over our telephone lines. Remember, how we train them up will be how they grow up. Also, remember, if they go astray, they will return to the way you have trained them. Respice Finem.[[In-content Ad]]
