Small businesses given a boost in construction industry
The construction job - transforming a decrepit set of studio apartments into a single dwelling for the Parks Department - is a relatively modest job.
But it will be the first of many small projects to help emerging firms get their businesses off the ground.
The projects will be tendered among graduates of the Bermuda Small Business Development Corporation’s ‘incubator programme’, an intensive 16-week training course to help tradesmen get the business skills to win contracts.
Solo Contracting Limited won the first bid to develop the beach side property Sea Song.
It is not clear what the building will ultimately be used for. The decision will be left to the Parks Department.
Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Kim Wilson said the project, and others like it, was designed to give a leg-up to emerging businesses.
“The Government is committed to increasing the pool of contractors equipped with the capacity to provide competitive bids and services to facilitate public sector projects.
“Supporting those companies who have taken advantage of the services made available through the Construction Incubator initiative will continue growth and development of a diversified economy, increase economic opportunities and diversify service providers for the people of Bermuda.”[[In-content Ad]]
