Senior dontaes $500 so motocross can get back on track

By Colin Thompson
Good Samaritan Dalton ‘Cuba Kid’ Stovell is living proof that “through great adversities the sweetest flowers bloom”.
The 78-year-old St. George’s resident has come to the financial aid of Bermuda Motocross Club (BMC) in their efforts to restore the hurricane- ravaged racetrack at Southside, St. David’s.
Mr. Stovell donated $500 dollars to the BMC and pledged to collect similar denominations from others to go towards the worthy cause.
He said: “I thought it would be a good idea to make a donation because I think scrambling is a very positive activity for the youngsters to be involved in. It gives them initiative, responsibility and also teaches them discipline.”
He added: “It’s a good sport and a lot of young people are involved in it, and so I think it should continue and have the backing of the whole community.”
Mr. Stovell is no stranger to charity having volunteered to serve in the 25th Brigade, 1st Commonwealth Division during the Korea War.
The Bermudian survived two tours of Korea where he took part in transport convoys tasked with supplying ammunition and other supplies to forward units.
“That was a very nerve-wrecking experience because all it took was one direct hit from enemy fire and everything could be over,” he recalled.
BMC president Jonathan Trott thanked Mr. Stovell for digging into his own pockets during trying economic times.
He said: “It makes me so glad to know that there are great people in Bermuda. He (Stovell) called me and pledged to make a donation and asked would it be okay if he could get a hundred people to follow him.
“I just said ‘sure’ and thanked him for being so positive. It’s just unreal how Bermudians are really one big family regardless of what’s going on (violence in community). Like I said before through great adversities the sweetest flowers bloom.”
Mr. Trott also thanked the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Works and Engineering (Marsh Folly and Airport Depots) and Butterfield Excavation for lending their support in the restoration of the racetrack.
He said over 50 per cent of the restoration process has already been completed at Southside.
“A lot of people are now starting to step up to the plate…. you have to see it to believe it,” he said. “The Ministry of Works of Engineering  have again stepped up to assist us.
“They are going to be moving machines to try and get the area cleared out and put a big sea wall up to protect the riders on the track. Works and Engineering want to see the racetrack restored within two weeks.” n
It’s estimated the damage caused by hurricane Igor could run in the tens of thousands. But money isn’t Mr. Trott’s primary concern at the moment.
He said: “I’m really not concerned about the cost or amount of material needed.
My main concern is getting the youth back on the race- track in a positive environment.” n
